Sodium Hydroxide: Industrial Applications & Sourcing Guide

Sodium Hydroxide: Industrial Applications & Sourcing Guide

Sodium hydroxide (CAS 1310-73-2), commonly known as caustic soda or lye, is one of the most widely produced industrial chemicals globally. With the molecular formula NaOH, it is a white solid that is highly soluble in water, producing a strongly alkaline solution. Annual global production exceeds 70 million metric tons.

## What Is Sodium Hydroxide?

Sodium hydroxide is produced primarily through the chloralkali process — the electrolysis of sodium chloride (brine) solution. This process co-produces chlorine gas and hydrogen gas, making sodium hydroxide an integral part of the chlorine chemicals industry.

## Key Industrial Applications

**Pulp & Paper Manufacturing**
The pulp and paper industry is one of the largest consumers of sodium hydroxide. It is used in the kraft process to break down wood chips into pulp by dissolving lignin, the compound that binds wood fibers together.

**Water Treatment**
Sodium hydroxide is used in municipal water treatment to raise pH and neutralize acidity. It is also used to precipitate heavy metals from industrial wastewater.

**Textile Industry**
In textile manufacturing, sodium hydroxide is used in the mercerization of cotton — a process that increases the fiber's luster, strength, and dye affinity.

**Food Processing**
Food-grade sodium hydroxide is used in the curing of olives, the making of pretzels and bagels (lye wash), and the production of hominy. It is approved as a food additive (E524).

**Pharmaceuticals**
Pharmaceutical-grade NaOH is used as a pH adjuster in drug formulations and as a reagent in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

**Soap & Detergent Manufacturing**
Sodium hydroxide is used in the saponification of fats and oils to produce soap. It is also used in the production of synthetic detergents.

**Chemical Manufacturing**
NaOH is a fundamental reagent in chemical synthesis and is used in the production of bleach, drain cleaners, and numerous other chemical products.
